Stepanenko, O., & Stupak, O. (2023). The use of GPT chat among students in Ukrainian universities. Scientific Journal of Polonia University, 58(3), 202–207. https://doi.org/10.23856/5828
Artificial intelligence (AI) is prolific in our everyday surroundings. Artificial intelligence is used in human-like interactions with virtual assistants, chat-bots, and adaptive learning platforms. The authors of this short study aim to begin analyzing how technology, such as Chat GPT, is being utilized and the perceptions among students in higher education institutions in Ukraine. Almost everyone has an opinion about artificial intelligence in education, ranging from its potential to provide transformative learning experiences to concerns about academic integrity and privacy. Therefore, we must delve into how Chat GPT and similar technologies can promote efficiency and optimal learning experiences for learners and educators alike.
In this study, a total sample size of 120 students aged 21-23 took part in a Google Forms questionnaire. The questionnaire assesses students' responses on six responses regarding using Chat GPT for participating in and creating learning activities. The responses were rated on a 4-point Likert scale ranging from no, never to yes, always. The survey results conclude that most students use Chat GPT at least on a moderate level to aid in their learning journey. Twenty- percent of the students reported returned assignments due to potential academic integrity issues.
The strength of this study was that the authors took a rudimentary approach to explore perceptions and the use of Chat GPT in higher education, highlighting the need for future research on how to guide students in the utilization of artificial technology.
As an instructional designer, as my understanding of Chat GPT expands, so does my curiosity about how learners and educators alike can leverage AI to promote transformative learning experiences. AI has the potential to automate routine tasks so that educators can focus more time on projects that require deeper thinking and creativity.
